A note from Jana:
Dear Friends,
Northern Minnesota is woven into my life, heart, family and values. I grew up, practiced law and raised my family in this community. It is here I learned the importance of fairness, integrity and hard work. It is here that I have been honored to serve as District Court Judge for seven years.
Growing up, I spent summers on Lake Bemidji and worked for local businesses. In the winter, I spent hours at Buena Vista Ski Area. I was educated in the Bemidji School District and First Lutheran Church. I come from a farming family. My 104 year grandma Martha finally retired from farming and moved to Bemidji when she turned 90. My brother Chris farmed with and after her for many years. My parents, Dr. Chuck Austad and Dr. Ann Austad dedicated their careers to Bemidji State University. My brother Jim Austad and his wife Erica are attorneys who have practiced in Baudette, Grand Rapids, Bemidji and throughout the Ninth Judicial District. My three children, Carina (22), Ava (21) and Joe (17) were raised in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Being in a family can be hard work. As a judge I see the commitment and love of families. I also see the wounds of conflict, neglect and abuse. While the law and empathy do not heal wounds, they are part of creating a path forward for people able to walk it. I've been honored to have a role along with social workers, law enforcement officers, guardians ad litem, probation agents, educators and mental/chemical health professionals working together to support families.
Some time in 2021, my family will double. Like so many couples waiting to get married right now, Rod Will and I have put our plans to get married are on hold as COVID-19 makes gathering dangerous to the health of some of our loved ones. Rod grew up in Bemidji and returned home to practice medicine and is with Sanford Health in Bemidji and Walker. His three boys, Dan (28), Jack (26) and James (21) are all Bemidji High School graduates.
I’ve known the community of the Ninth Judicial District as a child, lawyer, mom and judge. To farmers, big and small businesses, industry, educators, law enforcement officers, social workers, medical professionals, service members, parents, environmentalists, religious leaders, laborers, educators: I ask for your support. It has been an honor to serve our community as a judge.
With gratitude,
Jana
